One of cinema’s most memorable spies is being brought back to the big screen by Belfast City Council, Bryson Recycling and Queen’s University Belfast for a one-off recycling event for students.

The special screening of Austin Powers will be held at Queens Film Theatre (QFT), Belfast on October 28th at 2.45pm and won’t cost a penny for students who turn up with an empty glass bottle or jar.

It follows on from the successful ‘Movies with Glass’ event that was held as part of the council’s annual Waste Week in June. And to get into the spooktacular spirit, those who attend are being encouraged to dress to kill, in homage to Mr Powers himself.

Councillor Pat McCarthy, chairman of the council’s Health and Environmental Services Committee, said: “Our recycled cinema event in June was a big hit with movie lovers and it’s a great way of raising awareness about the importance of recycling.

“Students have historically been a hard-to-reach group when it comes to recycling and while many of them are doing their bit for their environment and using the council’s recycling facilities, there is always room for improvement.

“Our staff have been working very hard - at freshers’ fairs and other university events - to raise awareness about the council’s ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ campaign, and to provide information and advice on how students can better manage their waste.”

Glass recycling is quite a simple process and can be done over and over again without any loss in quality.  Many students live in areas that have black kerbside recycling boxes that accept glass for recycling.  There are also over 40 bottle banks in the city as well as our recycling and civic amenity sites where you can recycle your glass for free. 

The council recently installed recycling facilities for students living at Queen’s Elms, Guthrie House, College Gardens and Mount Charles.

Councillor McCarthy added: “We hope this will be a fun event for students and I’m expecting to see a lot of Austin Powers lookalikes turn out in force for this special screening.”
