Local recycling efforts benefit NICHS

Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke- (NICHS) is set to benefit from a £6,312 donation from Bryson Recycling, following a campaign which has seen Bryson donate £1 for every tonne of recycling it has collected to the charity.

The campaign, which was launched in December and ran until the end of March, encouraged households to recycle as much as possible using their Bryson Recycling kerbside box and resulted in the collection of over 6,300 tonnes of recyclable materials by the company.

Bryson’s donation to the Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke Association follows previous years’ “£1 a tonne” campaigns which have provided thousands of pounds in support to other local charitable organisations including the Simon Community and Sport Relief NI.

The donation from Bryson Recycling, which is part of the Bryson Charitable Group, Northern Ireland’s leading social enterprise, will be used by NI Chest Heart & Stroke to help fund rehabilitation and the provision of essential medical equipment for those with stroke, cardiac and chest illnesses, while also supporting NICHS’ advice helpline and the research and health promotion work carried out by the charity at a local level.

Announcing the donation, Claire McCallum, Communications Manager at Bryson Recycling, said:

“We are very pleased to be able to assist NI Chest Heart & Stroke with this donation, which demonstrates the commitment of local people to recycling. We encourage people to recycle as much as possible through our kerbside box collection service, and it is great to see thousands of households embracing the opportunity to help those suffering from chest, heart and stroke illnesses in their local communities. We are delighted by the success of the campaign and look forward to seeing the funding put towards treating and preventing these illnesses in Northern Ireland.”

Vanessa Elder, Fundraising Manager at NICHS, commented:

“Bryson Recycling’s donation will be of great assistance in helping to support our work, and we would like to thank all the households that contributed by recycling as much of their waste as possible. NI Chest Heart & Stroke provides vital services to local people living with stroke, cardiac and chest-related illnesses and those who care for them, helping to ensure that they receive the best care and support available. We also work to educate people about how these illnesses may be prevented in the hope of reducing incidence among future generations.

However, with tough economic conditions making financial donations less affordable for many people, securing funding has proven a significant challenge in recent times, so we are very grateful for the boost that Bryson Recycling’s donation provides. It will be of great use in helping us to continue our work to treat, manage and prevent chest, heart and stroke-related illness in Northern Ireland”.
